Federation Starglow
Late dusk or early night at one of the most impressive mountains in Australia. During April of 2018 we walked here over a 10 day return trip. It rained almost the entire time except for a lucky few days when we were up on the range, this being one such occasion free of rain and mist. We actually had a downright scary experience camped on a nearby lake the night before this shot. It had been quite unstable atmospherically and the forecast before we left on the hike (4 days earlier) was for some evening thunderstorms. I didn't really think much of it, being a long range forecast. However soon after we had finished cooking dinner there was a distance roll of thunder. Within no joke 2minutes later a storm had built directly on top of us. It was dropping huge blinding bolts of lightning all around us. The kind of storm where it's lightening and instant thunder (less than 500m away). Given our camp on a relative high point, the only protection a broad moraine about 10m higher than us daming the lake and the surrounding peaks, we were absolutely shitting our pants. Trying to remember what the hell to do in this situation, which is pretty much nothing haha. So this storm kept going dropping heaving rain, lightening and instant thunder for about 15 minutes then we are like, ok we are still alive, that's great! Phew made it. Half an hour later another storm brews over the range and does exactly the same thing. Tense tense times sitting in a aluminium framed tent with no place to run. But obviously we survived without being electrocuted. Hands down one of the scariest moments of my life!! All in all, what a spectacular peak though. Federation Peak as the first stars appear, Tasmania 2018.
